Most Anticipated Books of 2014

2013 was a decent year for reading for me, but I was hoping for so much more. Fortunately, I have plenty to look forward to in 2014 - most of these are from tried and true, and favorite, authors of mine, however there are a few that I'm looking forward to from new-to-me authors as well.

In alphabetical order by author.

Title: Magic Breaks
Author: Ilona Andrews
Series: Kate Daniels, Book 7
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 29 July 2014

This series. I can't even say how much I love this series, there are no words to adequately describe my feelings for it. Ilona Andrews is the best. Period. If you're not reading this series, please, go start! Because this is the 7th book in the series there are necessarily some spoilers in the blurb below - I've added the description of the series in general as well:

The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.

It’s a volatile, screwed-up world. Magic feeds on technology, gnawing down on skyscrapers until most of them topple and fall, leaving only skeletal husks behind. Monsters prowl the ruined streets, werebears and werehyenas stalk their prey; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst for knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But sometimes even trained killers make friends and fall in love, and when the universe tries to kick them in the face, they kick back.

Title: Bitter Spirits
Author: Jenn Bennett
Series: Roaring Twenties, Book 1
Genre: Paranormal Historical Romance
Release Date: 7 January 2014

This is a new to me author, and I admit that part of my desire to read it is because of that gorgeous cover! In addition, I've always been in love with the Roaring Twenties.

It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits...

Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.

Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her...

On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise...

Title: Night Broken
Author: Patricia Briggs
Series: Mercy Thompson, Book 8
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 4 March 2014

Patricia Briggs is one of my go-to authors for a good read. I love the world she's created here, and the characters that inhabit this, oftentimes, messy world captivate me.

Again, because this is the 8th book in the series, there are spoilers in the book blurb. I've added the series description here, also, for those that haven't started this series yet.

Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...

Title: Shifting Shadows
Author: Patricia Briggs
Series: Mercy Thompson - Short Stories Compilation
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: October 2014

A compilation of short stories in the Mercyverse, including all the stories from previous anthologies as well as several new ones.

{Angela's Notes: Star of David (previously in Wolfsbane and Mistletoe) Centers on David Christiansen, who was briefly mentioned in Moon Called. It's a heartwarming story of how murder and deception can bring a family together.

Seeing Eye (previously in Strange Brew) A blind witch helps sexy werewolf Tom Franklin find his missing brother—and helps him in more ways than either of them ever suspected.

Fairy Gifts (previously in Naked City) A vampire who finds some measure of redemption in the mines far below Butte, Montana.

Gray (previously in Home Improvement) A vampire returns to her first home, and finds more than the memories she was seeking.

Title: The Kraken King
Author: Meljean Brook
Series: Iron Seas, Book 4
Genre: Steampunk Romance
Release Date: January - March 2014 (as serial); August 2014 (full novel)

I feel like this is a book I've been awaiting forever. I fell in love with Meljean's intricately detailed world of the Iron Seas and cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next - enough to even read it while it's still in serial format (something I'm not entirely a fan of).

Series info:
THE IRON SEAS series combines nanotech and pirates with a gritty, gaslit Victorian atmosphere to create swashbuckling steampunk romance...with an emphasis on the steam.

Book Blurb to Come

Title: Recklessly Royal
Author: Nichole Chase
Series: Suddenly, Book 2
Genre: Contemporary New-Adult Romance
Release Date: 25 March 2014

I read Suddenly Royal last year and absolutely adored this sweet and light (and surprisingly sexy) new-adult romance. The lack of drama made it a completely feel-good read, and I'm eagerly anticipating the next book, featuring Catherine.

Catherine has spent her life being the perfect princess. She’s kept her hands clean, her head down, and most importantly—men at arm’s length. After all, most men are after only one thing, and for Cathy there’s a lot more at stake than her bed; she has to worry about the fate of an entire nation. But at the rate she’s going, Cathy is afraid she’ll give the Virgin Queen a run for her money. She is tired of waiting for someone good enough to come along. She has a plan, and it all hinges on seducing the one man who seems utterly unimpressed by all things royal. The one man she is tempted by more than any other . . .

When David arrives at the royal wedding of his friend, the newly ordained Duchess Samantha Rousseau, he expected to feel uncomfortable and out of his element, but he wasn’t prepared to be targeted by Prince Alex’s gorgeous younger sister. With Cathy’s giant blue eyes, killer figure, and sense of humor, it won’t take long before he gives in. But when he finds out just how innocent the crown princess really is, will he play the part of knight in shining armor or the dashing rogue?

Title: Dark Skye
Author: Kresley Cole
Series: Immortals After Dark, Book 14
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: 5 August 2014

Kresley Cole does some of the best tortured couples I've ever read - so tortured, in fact, that I'm sometimes not quite sure how she's going to make me believe in the HEA at the end. But she always does. Add that to the fact that I always laugh while reading her books, and she's got an incredibly diverse cast of characters - and these are always eagerly anticipated novels for me.

Every creature or being that was thought to be mythical . . . isn’t.

They all secretly exist alongside humans and enjoy the gift of immortality. There are hundreds of different kinds: from Vampires to Lykae, from Furies to Shifters, from the Fey to Valkyries.

These immortals call their world The Lore.

You may have had a brush with one of Lorekind already. The eccentric billionaire with hypnotic charisma—and an aversion to sunlight. The ethereal waif of impossible beauty—whose fingernails look more like claws. The Highlander with a seventeenth-century Scottish accent and animal magnetism—who can never be penciled in on the night of the full moon.

They walk among us, but they war among themselves. Each faction has its strengths, weaknesses, and age old prejudices against the others. Every five hundred years, the Accession, a battle for supremacy, rages. That time is now. . . .

Title: [Untitled]
Author: Susan Ee
Series: Penryn and the End of Days, Book 3
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Release Date: 2014

At the urging of friends I picked up Angelfall just a short week before the release of the second book in the series, World After. I was immediately enthralled and in love with Penryn, Raffe, and this fabulously dangerous world Susan Ee has created.

Because there's no blurb yet, here's the blurb for Angelfall:

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

Title: A Shiver of Light
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton
Series: Merry Gentry, Book 9
Genre: Urban Fantasy*
Release date: 3 June 2014

Okay, look, I feel a little dirty for even including this. But my masochism has had me waiting for this book ever since I read Swallowing Darkness back in 2009! This is a series that I love to hate.

I will say that it's one of the most intriguing ideas of a world I've ever read. I wish it were better executed and utilized though.

*Though it's conventionally known as Urban Fantasy, I beg to differ. I would call this Sex-Fantasy with a little urban and paranormal thrown in just to mix it up a bit.

Here's the blurb from the first book, Kiss of Shadows
My name is Meredith Gentry, but of course it's not my real name. I dare not even whisper my true name after dark for fear that one hushed word will travel over the night winds to the soft ear of my aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness. She wants me dead. I don't even know why...

I fled the high court of Faerie three years ago and have been in hiding ever since. As Merry Gentry, I am a private investigator for the Grey Detective Agency: Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions. My magical skills, scorned at the courts of Faerie, are valued in the human world. Even by human standards, my magic isn't flashy, which is fine by me. Flashy attracts attention and I can't afford that.

Rumour has it that I am dead. Not quite. I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. To speak that name after dark is to call down a knock upon your door from a hand that can kill you with a touch. I have been careful, but not careful enough. The shadows have found me, and they are going to take me back home, one way or another.

So the running is over. But the fighting has just begun...

This is more a summary of what's happened so far, instead of a blurb for A Shiver of Light

Title: As Hot As It Gets
Author: Elle Kennedy
Series: Out of Uniform, Book 10
Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance
Release Date: 11 February 2014

This series has gotten better and better the more I've read. I'm so addicted to these SEALs and watching them fall in love. Elle Kennedy writes some of the sexiest menage scenes I've ever read - and that's saying a lot considering I'm not a huge fan of menages in my romances. Now we're on the last book in the series, and I'm both sad and so freaking EXCITED!!

Sea, air, land, the bedroom...this SEAL is always in command.

An Out of Uniform Story

After watching his teammates settle down one by one, Navy SEAL Jackson Ramsey is ready to say goodbye to the single life. He’s even met a woman who intrigues him, challenges him, and turns him right on—Mia Weldrick, the funny and beautiful gardener he can’t wait to get to know better.

Except Mia isn’t interested in dating him, which means it’s time for Jackson to unleash his Texas charm and do some serious wooing.

With a teenage brother to raise, two jobs, and, frankly, a complete disinterest in sex, Mia has no room in her busy life for a six-foot-five SEAL with a naughty streak a mile wide. But one hot kiss from Jackson has her imagining all the dirty ways she could fit him in.

It isn’t long before their no-string fling transforms into something more. As desire unearths emotions and deeply buried secrets, Mia has to decide whether to give love a chance to grow, or let it slip it away.

Warning: This Southern gentleman is wickedly ungentlemanly in the bedroom. He likes it rough and kinky, and he’s not afraid to make his sexual demands known. Anal, spanking, voyeurism, and other surprises await you in this last and dirtiest Out of Uniform installment

Title: Shattered
Author: Kevin Hearne
Series: Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 7
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 17 June 2014

I've been a fan of this series since I first read Hounded. I'm not sure I can begin to describe this series without rambling for paragraphs and paragraphs. Part of what makes this a favorite is Atticus' snark and wit. I just love his geekiness and the way he connects with nature. Below is the blurb for Hounded (which is much less spoilery than the most recent blurb):

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power - plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish - to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.(

Title: River of Dreams
Author: Lynn Kurland
Series: Nine Kingdoms, Book 8
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: 7 January 2014

I first read Lynn Kurland many years ago when I picked up Dreams of Stardust from a book exchange at work by chance. I fell in love and immediately went about starting her extensive backlist. When I heard she was going to be doing a fantasy romance series I was ecstatic - rightly so.

This is the second book in the third trilogy set in the world of the Nine Kingdoms. Though, so far, Morgan's story is my favorite, I still await each book and re-read the entire series nearly every year.

Title: Dreams of Lilacs
Author: Lynn Kurland
Series: de Piaget / MacLeod, Book 25
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: 29 April 2014

I love the de Piaget's - have ever since I first met them. And Isabelle's story is one I've been anticipating since nearly the beginning. The last of the siblings to have her HEA written about, and I canNOT wait.

Isabelle de Piaget is determined to elude her overprotective family by means of a hasty escape to France. But instead of making a surprise visit to her brother there, she winds up shipwrecked on the French coast with no memory of who she is or how she came to awaken in the dark and forbidding castle of an equally brooding lord.

Gervase de Seger rescues—very reluctantly—the bedraggled urchin he finds on the road and puts her to work where he can ignore her. Unfortunately, he soon realizes that her brother is an intimidating lord who is going to be absolutely furious when he learns that his beloved sister has been laboring as a scullery maid. Yet Isabelle may be the one who holds the key to solving Gervase’s most pressing problem: that someone has been trying to finish the task of separating him from his title and his lands.

Finding the truth propels Gervase and Isabelle from the buried secrets of half-ruined keeps to the glittering French court, and to the realization that love can blossom in the most perilous circumstances—and in the most unexpected places of the heart . . .

Title: The Caller
Author: Juliet Marillier
Series: Shadowfell, Book 3
Genre: Young-Adult Fantasy
Release Date: 9 September 2014

I don't know why but I'm just not a fan of this cover. Anyway, the Shadowfell series is a sweeping fantasy story that I'm eager to see the conclusion of. Neryn is a heroine that I not only like, but respect.

Here's the blurb for Shadowfell:

Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill--a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk--Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec.

During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death--but whose motives in doing so remain unclear. Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban's release from Keldec's rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.

Title: Master of Monsters
Author: Danielle Monsch

As they follow a twisted path through the underbelly of the New Realms, Wulver has two battles to face – the battle to keep his beast from submitting to the Master of Monsters, and the battle to keep himself from claiming Rule.

Title: Shield of Winter
Author: Nalini Singh
Series: Psy/Changeling, Book 13
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: 3 June 2014

I can't say enough good things about Nalini Singh - her two series, everything she writes in fact, is always highly anticipated by me because she never fails to deliver. I'm especially excited about this book as it features a hero that I've been wanting to read more about for a long, long time.

Because it's a bit of a spoiler, here's the series blurb:
Two of the strongest Changeling packs in North America are the DarkRiver Leopards, controlling the San Francisco area, and the SnowDancer Wolf Pack, in control of the rest of California. The icy and emotionless Psy are under the control of a powerful council of seven beings with very different goals. And some of the humans, often thought to be the weakest of the three races, have decided to level the playing field.

And the blurb from Slave to Sensation, the first book in the series:
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation" - the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion - and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities - or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation...

Title: [Untitled]
Author: Nalini Singh
Series: Guild Hunter, Book 7
Genre: Urban Fantasy Romance
Release Date: October 2014

Series info:
Angels rule over humans and vampires, but the most powerful of them all are the archangels. Beautiful. Deadly. Sometimes cruel. Always unpredictable. There are several different groups represented – the archangels, the angels, the vampires, and the Guild Hunters.

And because there isn't a blurb for this book yet, here's the blurb for Angels' Blood, Book 1:
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

Title: Dreams of Gods and Monsters
Author: Laini Taylor
Series: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Book 3
Genre: Young-Adult Paranormal
Release Date: 1 April 2014

I had reservations before picking up Daughter of Smoke and Bone at first, being more than a little burnt out on young-adult novels that had little-to-no storyline and idiotic characters. I am glad that I didn't pass this one up, because I was so pleasantly surprised. And I can't wait to see what happens with Karou and everyone else I love.

Huge spoilers abound if you haven't read this series, so here's the blurb for Daughter of Smoke and Bone:
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Title: The King
Author: J.R. Ward
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 12
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: 1 April 2014

I'm so addicted to this series, I love it, it makes me happy, and I anticipate each book in the series that's coming out every year. I'm looking more forward to this one as it takes us back to re-visit Wrath and Beth - King and Queen, from the very first book: Dark Lover:

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

Title: The Winter King
Author: C.L. Wilson
Series: N/A
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: 29 July 2014

I've been waiting for the next C.L. Wilson book ever since I finished her Tarien Soul, fantasy romance, series a few years ago. She's one of the best I've read at mixing fantasy and romance and I'm excited for this new book of hers!

Wynter Atrialan, the Winter King, once lived in peace with his southern, Summerlander neighbors, but when the prince of Summerlea steals Wynter’s bride and murders his young brother, Wynter calls upon a dangerous Wintercraig magic called the Ice Heart and marches against Summerlea.

After three bitter years of battle, a victorious Wynter arrives at Summerlea’s royal palace to issue his terms of surrender. The prince of Summerlea stole Wynter’s bride and slew Wynter’s Heir. He wants the loss replaced. The Ice Heart is consuming him. Wynter hopes holding his own child in his arms will rekindle the warmth in his heart before he becomes the monster of Wintercraig legend, the Ice King.

The Summer King has three very precious daughters whom he loves dearly. Wynter will take one of them to wife. She will have one year to provide him with an Heir. If she fails, he will send her to face the mercy of the mountains and claim another princess for his wife. And so it will continue until Wynter has his Heir or the Summer King is out of daughters.

The plan is perfect—except for one small detail. The Summer King has a fourth daughter. One of which he is not so fond. And she is a fiercely passionate creature, with a temper as volatile as the forces of her weathergift, the power of storms.

So, that's my rather long list (if you've managed to make it to the end here)! What are you excited for and looking forward to?
