Review: Dark Soul by Aleksandr Voinov

Title: Dark Soul: The Complete Collection
Author: Aleksandr Voinov
Series: Dark Soul (1-5)
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: 1 June 2012

Love lights even the darkest soul.

A killer's moral compass rarely points true, and among made men, being gay is a capital crime. But Silvio Spadaro, deadly prodigy and heir to a Family fortune, is determined to find his own way--at the feet of the man he loves or by the barrel of a gun--no matter the dangers or costs.

Stefano Marino lives a comfortable--some might even say enviable--life. As a mob boss at the top of the food chain, he has it all: money, respect, a beautiful wife he loves as much now as the day they wed. But he also has a turf war on his hands, and far too soft a heart for this dark business.

When Silvio is sent to help Stefano with his turf war, sparks fly. Stefano loves his wife, but he wants Silvio. It's a desire he hardly knows how to process, but Silvio, ever the patient predator, maneuvers Stefano closer and closer to his bed each day. Stefano resists; giving in to these dark desires means giving up on his marriage, and exposure would surely mean death. Yet there's no denying Silvio's magnetic pull, or the long-repressed urges inside himself. Yielding is inevitable, but he may yet find a way to hold on to everything--and everyone--he loves.

I admit, I was trepidatious when I started this collection. I knew it was going to push some of my limits – and probably blow right by others. And I wasn't wrong. Dark Soul isn't an easy or gentle love story, but it's oh-so worth it.

I'm going to try not to spoil much of the story, because I think that there's a lot to be said for experiencing each moment as it comes. Additionally it's hard to pick out moments that happen in the book without being able to explain every step that brought the characters to that moment. The above story blurb does a pretty good job of giving you a set-up on who the characters are, but what it doesn’t do is tell you how absolutely attached you'll become to these two.

I never expected to like, much less love two characters in the mafia – one a boss, and the other a hitman – but it didn't take long for me to start rooting for these two. Stefano has a deeply honorable side, something that will always draw me. And Silvio is so utterly honest. With himself, about himself, and about others. Not that he advertises he's gay, he does keep it quiet, but he makes no apologies, no excuses, and doesn't ever even worry. He's comfortable in who he is, Silvio's just looking for someone to be comfortable with.

Stefano is definitely that man. He's instantly attracted to Silvio, and doesn’t quite know what to do with that attraction. But as his trust, and care, grow for Silvio it makes it that much harder to keep from acting on it. Stefano's struggle with his feelings for his wife and Silvio – at the same time – was one of the most poignant things in this book. Considering I'd come to care about Donata, Stefano's wife, as well I had a vested interest in how it was all going to turn out. I will say that I was absolutely breathless at the resolution, not to mention incredibly happy and relieved.

I said it earlier, but I'll say it again: Dark Soul has some tough moments. If you absolutely can't stand dubious consent (in any form), or cheating at all, it does occur here. However, while both of those things are normally huge issues for me, turning me off of a book instantly, Aleksandr Voinov managed to handle two incredibly difficult subjects beautifully, with grace and care. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone willing to read something that might take them just a bit outside their comfort zone – I know they'll be glad they did. I was.

Mr. Voinov has definitely gained a fan in me, and I can't wait to pick up more of his works.

I do admit that I like the covers for the individual series better than the collection.

Review: Victorian Valentine by Riley Shane (and Giveaway!)

Title: Victorian Valentine
Author: Riley Shane
Genre: Historical MM Romance
Release Date: 10 February 2012
Price: $1.99

February 14, 1860:

When Lord Christopher Norcutt finds a valentine in his bedroom, he believes it must have been left there by mistake; fourth sons of earls who prefer the company of other men are not the sort to attract admirers. But the secret valentine only marks the beginning of an unusual day for Christopher. As Christopher sets off to fulfill an obligation to his brother, a second valentine comes into his possession — this one discovered in a place that has meaning only to Christopher and his lover, Jack Ashton. Does a Valentine’s Day surprise await Christopher at the end of his journey?

Victorian Valentine is a short, incredibly sweet, beautiful romance. I was really happy for the happiness that Christopher and Jack were able to find. The story is told from Christopher's point of view, and I really just enjoyed every moment spent with him. I would love to see more of these two at some point. I'd also really love to see more of Christopher's family (and perhaps even Jack's twin brother...)

I can't wait to read what Riley Shane delivers next.

Review: Chasing Alex by Riley Shane

Title: Chasing Alex
Author: Riley Shane
Series: Stand-Alone
Genre: Contemporary M/M Romance
Release Date: June 1, 2011

Chase Larkspur is a rodeo cowboy who likes a good ride…as long as he’s the one calling the shots. Alex Dawson is a bull rider who tests every limit Chase has ever set. The passion between them burns bright and hot, until Alex grows tired of keeping their relationship a secret—and of being the one who’s always ridden. Alex lays down an ultimatum, and then the rest is up to Chase. Does Chase let the best thing in his life run away to the family ranch, or is he brave enough to chase Alex down??

Reunion stories are some of my favorites; I love the idea of people that were together finally finding love with each other. In this case there was the ultimatum – and the events that led to it – that tore Chase and Alex apart. When they come back together, their reunion is both steamy and emotional.

It’s great to read a short story, just over 30 pages, that manages to pull me in and make me care. But this one definitely does. I was rooting for Chase and Alex to get back together, to understand one another and to give themselves, and each other, a chance.

Chasing Alex is a quick, sexy, eminently satisfying read. Riley Shane has a gift of writing great stories with characters that I love and want to see more of. Recommended!!

Review: Two-Man Advantage by Riley Shane

Title: Two-Man Advantage
Author: Riley Shane
Series: Seattle Marauders, Book 1
Genre: Male/Male Erotic Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 25, 2011

Blurb from author’s website:
When Professor Nathan Troy walks into his cabin and finds a naked man in his bed, he figures his one-man vacation to snowy Lake Tahoe can’t get any worse. It’s not that Nate doesn’t appreciate the view…he’d just prefer he knew the man in question.

Kyle Harper has come to Lake Tahoe to escape the memories of his former life – one where he was a star hockey player until a career-ending injury shattered his dreams forever. All Kyle wants is peace, and he certainly isn’t going to get it with a prickly, stubborn man waking him up, insisting that Kyle is in his cabin.

An accidental double-booking and a wary compromise puts the two in close quarters. Attraction heats things up, but Nate’s not about to let his libido lead him into making the mistake of getting involved with his unexpected roommate. Kyle, however, seems determined to get under his skin at every turn. Both men soon learn that they can’t outrun desire. But lust is easy; it’s opening their hearts that’s hard. Each will have to let go of the past before they can take advantage of the future the two of them could have together.

Nate and Kyle both end up at the Tahoe resort running from something. Past pain, hurt and heartache. But regardless of what they’re trying to escape these two wonderful heroes are fighters. When something good comes along, no matter how improbable it seems, they’re both willing to take a chance. To grab life and see where it leads. That endeared me greatly to both of them.

Nate’s just out of a relationship that had really died a slow death quite a while ago. More than pain and loss there’s embarrassment and resignation, which are still two difficult things to get over. Kyle’s loss is deeper. His entire life-dream has been shattered. When Kyle gets to the cabin he’s floundering, trying to find his place again.

Watching them come together made me smile. These are two heroes that I rooted for getting their happily-ever-after. Added to the way they complemented each other, filling in missing needs, I would be remiss if I didn’t add that they are sexy-as-hell together.

Two-Man Advantage is a hot, sinful, and incredibly romantic love story. I kept sneaking glimpses while at work, as I just couldn’t put it down! Riley Shane gave us two heroes to fall in love with, to cheer for, and that left me begging for more. Highly recommended!

Review: Quinn's Hart by Cassandra Gold

Title: Quinn's Hart
Author: Cassandra Gold
Series: Stand Alone
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Release Date: 22 February 2010

Unbearably-shy Quinn Delaney has never had much luck with men. Uncomfortable, partly due to his imposing frame, he’s never been comfortable in large groups and spent his time trying to fade into the background. But when his former foster sister calls and begs him to fill a vacant spot on a singles trip to Walt Disney World, Quinn can’t say no. Dreading it, he’s certain he’ll be miserable. Until he meets Josh.

Three weeks ago Josh’s boyfriend dumped him. On his answering machine. Instead of getting down about it Josh decides to take the vacation they were planning to The Magic Kingdom anyway. With a few minor changes to his plans he’s rebooked on a single’s trip and excited to enjoy his time and possibly meet someone to share it with.

He’s not expecting shy, sexy Quinn – who’s clueless about his own appeal – and the more he gets to know him, the more he wants. Josh is Quinn’s dream man, but if he’s going to win him he’ll have to open up and take risks. He’ll have to risk the one thing he never has before – his heart.

Cassandra Gold writes a pure, sweet love story in Quinn’s Hart. Josh is a nice, out-going, caring man that doesn’t let anything get in the way of what he wants. I loved that he was not only willing, but eager, to embrace life and Quinn. Quinn I fell in love with from the first page. He’s sweet, shy, a bit beat down about love, and has a huge heart.

As we get to know them, and they each other, you can’t help but root for them to get their happily-ever-after. There are some minor obstacles for them to overcome, but each one helps them grow. Not only individually, but in their relationship.

Quite simply, Quinn’s Hart just made me happy. I think I was smiling all the way through it and upon finishing it I wanted to start all over again. And did. I definitely recommend Quinn’s Hart to anyone looking for a happy, sweet romance with two great protagonists that you will absolutely love.

Review: The Taste of Magick by Riley Shane

Title: The Taste of Magick
Author: Riley Shane
Series: Stand-alone (for now)
Genre: M/M Paranormal Romance
Release Date: 30 October 2010

Warlock Jason Prescott hates Halloween. His lover, Travis Byrne, is equally in love with it. After two years together this Halloween may just be their most important one. Travis is beginning to become frustrated with Jason's lack of shared emotion, and Jason knows that if he wants to keep Travis - and oh, does he - he's going to have to up the ante, and step outside his comfort zone.

Jason's point-of-view is the one we see this story through, and he's a fantastic character's head to be in. It makes it so much easier to understand him. He's absolutely in love with Travis, but has a horribly difficult time showing it, or even saying it. When he realizes that this could cause him to lose Travis, he knows he has to do more. What I love is that he doesn't just know he has to do more, he takes responsibility for not having done enough, and pushes himself forward to ensure that Travis is getting the love that he gives so freely back. Added to this, Jason has got quite the sarcastic personality, and I loved hearing his musings. Especially when he was disagreeing with himself. There were quite a few times that I was just grinning while reading his thoughts.

Travis is just fun. And sweet. He has no problems showing his love and care, and it hurt me a little bit to see him hurting from not getting the same back from Jason. He throws himself whole-heartedly into things, and doesn't shy away from taking the risk to his heart. I desperately wanted him to get everything he deserved.

Riley Shane has skillfully crafted a magical world filled with wonderful characters. The Taste of Magick gives us a glimpse into the continuation of a relationship, with the fun-filled background of Halloween, while fairly sizzling with heat. Every moment spent with Travis and Jason just makes you want to beg for more.

If you're looking for a quick, fun, hot, Halloween read, you absolutely MUST buy The Taste of Magick by Riley Shane! I very highly recommend it!
